BRONX HIP-HOP COLLECTIVE TO LAUNCH A ‘RADICAL’ LIBRARY FOR YOUTH

MOTT HAVEN — Rappers feed off great beats, but they’re nourished by great books.

That’s one message the hip-hop-centric Rebel Diaz Arts Collective hopes to convey to local youth with a community library they will soon run out of their headquarters in a former candy factory by the Bruckner Expressway.

“I tell them, ‘The more you read, the iller you’ll be as an emcee,’” said Rodrigo Venegas, aka Rodstarz, one-third of the rap crew, Rebel Diaz, and a founding member of the cultural collective with an activist bent.

The roughly 20-member collective has partnered with Bluestockings, the independent Lower East Side bookstore, to amass about 300 mostly donated books on radical politics, Hispanic and black history and hip hop.

By erecting the small library in the same space where it hosts monthly hip-hop open mic nights that draw rising rappers and their fans from across the city, the collective is trying to convince these young people that the slickest rhymers are often also the sharpest readers.

“If we make it cool to read books in the South Bronx,” Venegas said, “then it’s a victory.”

The Richie Perez Radical Library, named for a South Bronx educator and activist who died in 2004, combines works by influential thinker-agitators, such as Angela Davis and Malcolm X, with writings by hip-hop luminaries including KRS-One, the RZA and Jay-Z.

2013 NYC Anarchist Bookfair Is Announced!

When: April 6th and 7th, 2013 from from 10 AM to 6 PM both days

Where: Clemente Soto Velez Community Ceneter (107 Suffolk Street)

This year’s book fair moves from the genteel West Village to the rough-and-tumble Lower East Side, the real historic hub of dissident squatter and anarchist culture, where we’ll reconnect with other LES organizations in a nucleus of uprising, conspiracy, and mutual confabulation bringing together for the general public two days of books and book reading, lectures, workshops, pamphlets, broadsides, zines, films, demos and skill shares, and much more we really don’t want to reveal — yet. In addition to being hosted by the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, a dynamic multicultural center on Rivington Street, the book fair will co-sponsor events at Bluestockings, ABC No Rio, Living Theater, Think Cafe, MoRUS (Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space), and at neighborhood gardens — most within walking distance.

The NYC Anarchist Book Fair is a free event but it costs money to make it happen. Expenses include renting the space (everyone is familiar with NYC real estate prices), renting tables, printing for advertising, etc. Any contribution would be greatly appreciated. If everyone were to contribute $5 (much less than many events charge for even one night) we will be able to keep up with rising rent and maybe try out new possibilities!

Could’ve done with having this little beauty before I arrived!

Might try digging up some more city guide zines - they’re an invaluable resource for zinesters, or anyone of a D.I.Y. persuasion.

THINGS TO KNOW:

1. In order to play this show, your band must be brand new. Not Enough Fest will be your first show.

2. Your group must be comprised of at least half women-indentified or queer-indentified people.

3. Beginning musicians are highly encouraged to participate. If you have never played an instrument before, if you have never been in a band before, this is a great opportunity to get started. Support for beginning musicians will be provided in the months before the fest. (See below.)

4. This fest is open to anyone & everyone. If you would like to play this fest, there is no formal process to apply. Just start a band and make us aware of your existence and your desire to play the fest by either talking to us in person or e-mailing us at nomorefiction@gmail.com.

5. There will be events leading up to Not Enough Fest such as social mixers for people to meet other musicians and find new bandmates, as well as instrument skillshares for people to teach and learn music skills. Keep your eye on this page, noladiy.org and No More Fiction’s Facebook page to find out about these events as they happen.

6. Proceeds from this Fest will benefit a local political community cause that is TBD.

7. The idea of Not Enough Fest came from these folks, although some of the details have been modified to suit the needs and realities of the New Orleans punk & DIY scenes.
